No time & too much information

In the digital age, our brains are literally bombarded with media content of various kinds. So that we don’t lose our minds, we subconsciously decide within a few seconds whether we consider something interesting and important or not. Images facilitate this selection of important and unimportant information. Why? Because we can grasp the meaning of a visual scene in less than a tenth of a second. This means that images make it easier to represent complex issues (background info in this blog post).

In social networks, we communicate almost exclusively with images or photos. It’s easy, fast and fun. It’s no wonder, then, that Instagram recorded a whopping 1,000 million active users in June 2018 (it was barely half that in 2016). The number of users is growing exponentially and Instagram lives on what? That’s right, from photos and memes.

Making your image stand out from the crowd may be more important than ever. The following apps could help you get even more out of your content.

1. snapseed | iOS & Android

The photo app developed by Google offers all the classic tools for image editing, such as cropping, straightening, fine-tuning, etc.
The feature that stands out, however, is the Snapseed app’s sharpening function. Unlike other apps, Snapseed does not leave a grainy image when sharpening. Another extremely useful function is the “selective filter”, which allows you to select only a certain area of an image and adjust its brightness, saturation and contrast individually to highlight it. This way you can decide for yourself which part of your image should particularly catch the viewer’s eye.

2. VSCO Cam | iOS & Android

Whether it’s sharpening, contrast, brightness or cropping – VSCO Cam gives you user-friendly access to all the functions you need to edit your photos. Besides quite a few of the editing options and cool filters that won’t make your photos look oversaturated, you also have the option to publish your photos in the app’s “journals”. This is why it’s considered a big Instagram competitor. It is also possible to synchronize images with different devices and then edit them there.

The only drawback is that whether you want to use the “journals” or not, you need an account to use VSCO Cam. Also, many filters are only available with the paid upgrade.

For this photo we used the filter C1 and you can see the Hessian State Museum. It’s located directly across the street from our office.

3. Collage Maker – Live Collage | iOS only

For those who love collages, Collage Maker is the right photo editing app. Collages are great for clearly visualizing comparisons (e.g. before and after comparisons) or compiling the top choices from the last event. It’s child’s play to add text to the collages in individual fonts and colors. Besides different layouts, the app also offers basic features, such as cropping or various filters.

In the example, we’ve put together the highlights of our Christmas decor this year in less than 3 minutes.

Also great: Collage Maker doesn’t watermark your collages like other apps do.

Plus point: no watermark

4. Videoshop | iOS & Android

With Videoshop you can create a cool video within minutes. Numerous features are available for this purpose, such as filters, editing, text, music from the Videoshop library, speed adjustment and much more. If needed, you can also spice up your videos with music from your own smartphone library, adjust transitions, or edit multiple videos into one. The “Videoshop” watermark will only appear at the beginning of your videos and if you shorten your video a bit afterwards, you can easily cut it out.

5. Foodie | iOS & Android

What do you think is pictured in the most shared photos on Instagram?
Bingo: Food. Whether it’s lunch, coffee or a snack in between – we love to share our meals with others. With Foodie, you have over 26 filters and other helpful features at your disposal to help you edit your photos and make your meals look even better. Yummy, isn’t it?

6. InShot | iOS & Android

The best thing about the Inshot app is that it’s photo and video editing in one!
Whether it’s trimming, filters, or music, you can customize your videos any way you want in no time. And you can quickly edit your photos, too.

Helpful for social media posts: InShot offers pre-built video and image formats that adapt the format of your content directly to the social media platforms (e.g. for YouTube, Instagram Stories or Facebook cover images).

The only drawback: The “InShot” watermark can only be removed with the paid upgrade.

7. Hyperlapse | iOS only

Record the two-hour trade show setup in 10 seconds? Yes, you can!
With Hyperlapse you can summarize ingenious videos in fast motion. The highlight of the app is that it instantly stabilizes your captured footage, which fixes shakiness and increases the quality of your videos as a result.
